Flandrien: Hard Men and Heroes

As London gears up to host the Tour de France, the world’s most famous cycle race, a new photography exhibition at HOST gallery pays tribute to the Flandrien – a generation of Flemish cyclists who make the athletes of the Tour de France look like amateur enthusiasts.

Tough, determined, unsophisticated riders, the Flandrien are the heroes of the Tour of Flanders and the Paris-Roubaix, races which specialise in some of the worst roads and weather conditions imaginable in bicycle racing. They are so far removed from the sun-drenched glamour of the Tour de France that it is almost a different sport.

Stephan Vanfleteren’s powerful black and white photographs provide an intimate and emotional portrait of these legendary sportsmen and the sport which dominates the social and cultural life of Flanders, the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. The unremarkable landscape breeds this particular type of rider who thrives in the driving rain and the bitter cold and on cobbled streets and treacherous inclines.

Stephan Vanfleteren, represented by the Panos Pictures agency, has been photographing the Flandrien for more than 15 years. His portraits of riders read like a ‘Who’s Who’ of Flandrien from the second world war to the present day: Alberic Schotte, Rik Van Steenbergen, Rik Van Looy, Roger de Vlaeminck, Eddy Merckx, Johan Musseeuw and Tom Boonen.

REVIEW

The only scathing review I have read for this album. This is a very subtle self referencing album bordering on pomposity... but still immensely enjoyable.

"Ma Fleur, long-awaited fifth composition from suave electro-jazz pioneers, The Cinematic Orchestra, is a reeking letdown – and in a way which only a British album could be. Listening to it is not unlike waiting for a train which never turns up.

You’re longing to be transported somewhere – preferably to that realm of euphoria to which critics testified in their ardent praise of previous Orchestra efforts. And, quite typically, nothing comes. When the album finishes you’re still slumped in the same spot – fifty-four minutes older and a good deal more jaded.

"well the debate about illegal downloads has obviously been raging for some time. some blame it for the crisis the music industry is currently facing, others herald this as a new utopian era for the consumer. contrary to the oversimplified views sighted by both ends of the spectrum I believe this to be a fairly complex issue with radically different implications for different artists and labels.

with this in mind I see no point in entering into debate on the general issue here. nor would I consider it my place to tell people what they should or shouldn't do. all I can comment on with any certainty is how all this has affected me personally and in light of my nearing release this might be of interest to those of you who've expressed an interest in my music.

over the last few months I've received a surprising amount of mail from people who'd downloaded 'foley room'. the comments are very positive and many encourage me to "keep on doing what you're doing" for which I am thankful.

today, the release date for my album, it's unlikely that you will see it in most high street shops and after the initial run it's unlikely that you will be able to order a copy even from online stores. this is because in-spite of more people having access to and apparently listening to my music than ever before, the predicted sales of the record were so low that it didn't justify the manufacture or distribution to any significant level. strange? not when you consider how hard it might be to convince any retail outlet, physical or digital, that they should try and sell something everybody could already get for free months beforehand.

so what does this mean in the wider context? who the fuck knows. like I say I won't speculate on the wider picture and you can draw your own conclusions as to what this means with regards to my own future output. again I stress that I'm not talking about what should happen here. I'm not saying I should be able to 'keep on doing what I'm doing' or even that my record deserves to be bought. all I'm saying, mainly for the benefit of those who might otherwise have been unaware, is that if you personally like what I do and wish to continue hearing more then the only way that will happen is if you support it."

Anyway... I am at this music shop counter, waiting to pay for A BitterSweet Life (a stunning piece of movie), when I notice this stockish country-side fellow at the listening post. He is banging his head "Europe" style and strumming air with virtual sticks. I am talking manic... and oblivious to the 62 individuals looking at him. A pensioner moves away cradling her bag. Some of us smile. This goes on for a good 5 minutes. I finally get to the counter, pay my due and start moving away when "Keith Moon" puts the headphones down and turns around.
I enquire with half a smirk: "Any good?"
Him seriously: "Naaaa, it's shiite mate".

I really enjoyed the first Elbow LP "Asleep at the Back", so am quite curious to see what LP number dos will bring... from an email on the Elbow mailing list:

The single, "Ribcage", will be elbow's first foray into the world of downloadable music and will also give fans access to a unique interactive screensaver that plays demo versions of tracks from the LP in addition to allowing access to video and audio tracks and the band's favourite website of the moment. Those who have already seen the screensaver will have noticed that the member of elbow in the "studio" changes over time, allowing everyone a chance to see their favourite member in action. "Ribcage" is a great taster for fans of "Cast of Thousands". Building on the elbow sound of the Mercury and Brit nominated "Asleep in the Back", the track grows into a hypnotic gospel mantra and is a pointer towards the more expansive approach of "Cast of Thousands", as evidenced by the first known recording of a pre tongue vocal. To achieve this bizarre and unique effect, producer Ben Hillier taped a contact mike to Guy's throat, producing a percussive vocal effect.

Also the guest at the recent Death in Vegas concert in Brixton was the seminal band ESG - supposedly the most sampled band ever, with a story going back to the 70s and apparently as influential as the Beatles. Read more here. If you go and see them you will finally understand why it is called a "fat sound". I loved it.

Some info on Parametric EQ in FruityLoops from Steve Duda:

"Here's my tips, with some repetition to drive home the most important points!
1) less is more
2) lower the frequencies you don't want, rather than boosting the frequencies you "want". This tends to create a more natural result and lowers the chance of clipping/bad sound.
3) try to ignore the visual graph (in terms of its vertical range) and look at the tooltips instead to see how much dB you are boosting/cutting, because in the fruity parametric even extreme EQ looks visually small due to the small display (compared to other parametric EQ plugins)
*Typically* you are boosting/cutting 6 dB maximum, and for more subtle EQ the range is 0-3 dB (in other words sliders should typically stay somewhat near the middle).
Producers/engineers with good ears will often tweak certain frequencies +/- 0.5 dB during a mix.... very subtle. Once again less is more, if you have a good sound source (sample) you shouldn't need much EQ to make it sit in the track.
4) use the output knob to match the level of the EQ when bypassed (click the EQ in the FX rack to bypass, if the sound gets quieter when bypassed, turn down the output of the EQ). The reason for this is that you don't want the level change to influence your EQ usage.
5) don't put EQ on the master, if you are doing a full (music) mix. You are probably just compensating for your speakers.
6) listen at different volume levels when EQ-ing, and ideally on another monitor source (second pair of speakers/headphones). The human ear has a wild frequency resonse that changes oddly with volume.
7) don't overdo it; with the right source samples and other FX, you should need very little EQ anywhere."
